How Much Will Ill-Fitting Dentures Complicate My Life?

When things don’t fit quite right, it can be uncomfortable, or even unhealthy. Ill-fitting shoes, for example, can be painful to walk in, and can also cause problems for your spine and bones. Dentures are no different when it comes to proper sizing!

If you’re wondering whether ill-fitting dentures are really that big of a deal, keep reading. You’ll see how a poor fit can create complications for your oral health and general wellness.

Discomfort

When dentures or partials don’t fit right, the first thing you’re likely to notice is oral discomfort. This dental device will start to rub against your gums and soft mouth tissue, causing swelling, soreness, and blisters.

If these symptoms sound familiar, ask your dentist to check on your dentures. It’s best not to have these problems at all, though, so try to visit your dentist regularly for biannual denture (and oral) checkups!

Trouble Speaking

Imagine trying to talk with teeth that constantly move. Seems like it would be difficult, right? Ill-fitting dentures are far more likely to slip and slide when you move your mouth to speak, which can make clear conversation tricky to say the least. English sounds that rely heavily on your teeth like “th,” “z,” and “t” will be especially hard to pronounce!

Difficulties Chewing

All that slippage produces a similar problem when it comes to eating. Because of the frequent movement, your bite will be uneven, and you’ll likely notice that your meals are harder to chew. If the issue becomes severe, you could even experience malnutrition. Proper chewing is an important part of the digestive process, so when it’s impaired, it’s much harder for your body to absorb nutrients.

Angular Cheilitis

Angular cheilitis is a nasty yeast infection that grows when saliva pools at the corners of your mouth. It often occurs in cases where a patient’s dentures or partials don’t fit quite right because the uneven bite redirects natural saliva flow. If you notice red, itchy patches around your lips, then it’s definitely time to get your dentures resized and your oral cavity treated for Angular cheilitis!

Getting Help from Your Dentist

It’s clear that ill-fitting dentures can complicate your life and have negative effects on your health, so it’s best to get them adjusted as soon as possible. Should you attempt to resize them at home, then?

No! Trying to correct an oral device yourself could very well make the problem worse. Instead, call your dentist’s office. Since you rely on your dentures for everyday oral function, they’ll do their best to see you in a timely fashion. You might even be able to get an appointment the same day you call!
